Deakin Uni have contacted us as they are seeking placements for pre-service teachers. I thought this might be of interest to any of you who teach food tech, or you can pass it onto your colleagues. Thanks x

    ...................................................................

We are seeking placements for Food Technology pre-service teachers in the below areas:

Balwyn North, Bentleigh, Burwood, Glen Iris, Frankston, Mount Waverley, Noble Park, Nunawading, and Rowville

Deakin University are currently seeking FOOD TECHNOLOGY placements for our Bachelor of Health and Physical Education PSTs for Term 4. Each pre-service teacher requires a 15-day placement from 06/10/2025 to 24/10/2025.

This will be the pre-service teacher’s fourth placement for this course, to date they have completed 25- days supervised placement in HPE.

    Placement expectations:
    * Undertake an orientation to the school environment
    * Plan lessons for a whole class and develop a unit of work if appropriate.
    * Undertake solo teaching of a whole class, preferably two lessons per day. One lesson per day is acceptable if a significant role is played when not teaching
    * Observe 2 lessons per day. Observation/teaching in a second/third method (IE; Health/PE) is encouraged but not mandatory.
    * Attend meetings, be involved in yard duty, school activities and any opportunities for engagement with the broader school community.

If this request can be accommodated, formal documentation will be emailed approximately two weeks before the beginning of the placement.

Deakin University pay rates are $36.80 per student/per day for student teacher supervision.

Further information is available on our website - https://www.deakin.edu.au/peo

Mike, a couple more responses from our Facebook group. From Claire - "

I've been doing this investigation myself recently, and have settled on the OmTech Polar 350 (50W desktop CO2).

I've previously run an emblaser and found that nothing I did would get it to actually cut acrylic, that and the issues with translucent material have put me off diode lasers completely. After that, it came down to balancing cost, work area, software versatility, and support availability. I've gone with the OmTech because I felt the potential lack of customer support (from reading online) was offset by the lower cost and the fact it runs RDWorks, not some proprietary software (like the Flux lasers)."

and from Chris - "Get the Lightburn software, it is worth the slight investment cost, you get a 30 day trial."

a quick question for you all - has anyone done any space-related projects in D&T? By that I means stars and planets and astronauts!!  Would love to hear about them if you have - pl@datta.vic.edu.au

Hi Mike, not quite what you were asking for, but here's a bit of advice -

"The desktop ones used to be useless because they didn’t have enough power.

The key is getting enough power otherwise they are too slow and so useless for classes. Can a desktop one do that now? I would tell you to see a demonstration on a range of materials to see speed/power etc before making a decision."

Will post any more feedback we receive .

We're looking to buy a desktop laser for our MS workshop to complement our larger Koenig in the SS workshop. There seem to be a lot of new options on the market. Any guidance on diode vs CO2, and the different options such as the new Emblaser Pro, xTool s1 or the OmTech 55w CO2 laser. It's a significant investment, so we want to get something that's reliable and will do the job. Mainly cutting/engraving thinner timber and acrylics.
