Advancing Biomaterials for a Sustainable Future with Compound

What if the materials we design with could regenerate ecosystems rather than deplete them?

Compound is a Melbourne-based studio established by industrial designer Vasundhara Gaur and software engineer Simon Beirouti, which develops new materials from kelp. By working at the intersection of biomaterials, systems thinking and circularity, their aim is to create ethical products, healthier environments and a more resilient future for all.

In this keynote presentation, Vasundhara and Simon will share their own journeys in design and engineering that led them to create Compound. You’ll learn from them about the science and design potential of biomaterials, and how they employ systems thinking and regenerative design principles to reflect the interconnected relationships between materials, production, people and the environment.

There are also 24 hands-on workshops and seminars running throughout the day. From plants for space to catapults & trebuchets, a Batik masterclass to design for disability, and machine maintenance to wooden jewellery, whatever you teach, you'll find the perfect sessions!

We're back with one of our most popular upskilling workshops for teachers - Fashion Illustration with Chantelle Taxis. But this year, we're delighted that we'll be hosted by the RMIT School of Fashion & Textiles.

At this hands-on workshop, participants will learn techniques to generate and communicate a range of creative design ideas. Chantelle will also take you through how to annotate your illustrations using the correct terminology to discuss the elements and principles of design.

You'll get to meet members of the RMIT team, enjoy a VIP tour of the incredible facilities and learn more about future study and career opportunities for your students.
