Build a Nesting Box - a Classroom Project Addressing the Bush Fire Crisis (PL2037)
THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL
This hands-on workshop will offer a step-by-step guide to designing and building nesting boxes for Australian wildlife made homeless by the bush fire crisis. It's a great way to engage your students in positive action and creative problem solving, offering a classroom project that tackles a real-life crisis affecting all Australians.
This hands-on session is delivered by Ken Aitken, who teaches at Yea High School. In 2009, his community was decimated by the Black Saturday bush fires, and with the support of the Lions Club, the Goulburn Broken River Authority and the Landcare Network, Ken set up his nesting box program with this Year 8 Wood class. He says, "To make something for the community was... a very cathartic experience for the students."
To date, the Yea High School students have built and placed over 200 nesting boxes in their local area.
There is currently a state-wide program in schools to build nesting boxes for communities damaged in the most recent fires, managed by Peninsula Grammar teacher Liz Keep. This workshop will support teachers who wish to participate with their classes but would benefit from the chance to improve their skills in working with wood,
The cost of this session includes all materials, and you will be able to take home your finished box to use as a guide for your classes.
